The 5 Hour Baby Sw Ball of Yarn

(or "Watch as I Blame This on Someone Else")

I've been staring at this beautiful hank of Anne yarn for ages now, thinking I shouldn't possibly start another project, least of all another pair of socks for myself. (a few KR members will know why this would be a bad thing, but we don't have to discuss any current numbers, do we, gang?)

(I should have taken a picture of the original hank, because it really was beautiful, but I had no idea it was going to turn into such an event, so just imagine a gorgeous plump pastel hank in this space. Ooohhhh.... Aaaaaahhhh.....)

But last night I was in a funk, feeling mopey and cranky and achey and uninspired. So at 8:24 last night I sat down with the hank, neatly draped it over my knees (since Clara had the task of reminding me to buy a swift at MD S&W but went claimed she was there for "work" not my personal shopping assistant. I know. She seems so nice online.)

Gradually, of course, I developed a slight tangle. Now, I actually enjoy getting out tangles to some extent. I mean, hey, I get to play with the yarn, I don't have to follow someone else's orders, I don't have to worry about fit, and I still get something pretty in the end.

But this was no mere tangle. I spent the next five hours (yup. Not one, not two, not three, not four, but FIVE hours) looking at this

and this

I had happened to glance at the clock when I sat on the couch to begin winding. 8:24. Five hours and 560 yards later,

at 1:24 this morning I had this.

Have I ever mentioned that I could be what some folks might call "stubborn"???

Oh, and clearly this was all Clara's fault for not making me buy a swift.

Oh, I really had some hope there that you had gotten totally frustrated and had decided to send the tangled lump off to ME! Maybe next time, huh? This is why none of us remind you to get a swift - we are hoping you will send us tangled cast-offs!

I use the cat tree as a sort of swift,
I get my excersize walking about and they have fun trying to thrwart my efforts....
( and no I can't spell but I mostly do know what I mean)

And I need to say that no one reminded me to get a swift at MDSW either. I spent an hour this morning detangling a hand of Spirit Trail Fiberworks sock yarn. Luckil mine was only 200 yds or I'd have been there longer. Now if only someone will be at Maine Fiber Frolic this weekend to remind me.

Oh, but Amie, having a swift is not always the right answer. I bought a hank of Interlacements merino yarn from Stitches MW in 2002. One of the 1100 yard hanks. So I slung it up on the swift and wound and wound. Next thing I know, the swift has collapsed under the weight of the remaining 800 yards of merino yarn (I hadn't tightened it enough). Over the several weeks, I was working out the tangles. I've since learned to tighten my swift as much as possible. And if the swift or the husbands arms are not available the back of my kitchen chair works too.

I forgotten to mention that your yarn is beautiful. And who said anything about having too many socks on the needles? Is it possible? Only if you're running out of stitch holders and safety pins that you're using as stitch holders, but even that might not count as too many. :)

How do.
Oy veh, that Clara: you can dress her up but can't take her anywhere ^..^
A swift would have been a smart purchase at MD for me as well but put me in the category w/the Amie-Amy crowd as I did not buy one while I was there!
XOXO
