Whenever I throw a ball and tell her to "get it" she looks at me as if to say, "are you mad?!". The German command for fetch is what sounds like "bring" with a lovely rolled ringing "r", and the drop/release command is "aus" or "out".

I'm just going for very short and sweet ("bring", not "go get it") and sounds that don't sound like another command. Oscar is currently learning a second language because I've decided that some recent bratty attitude might be linked to "No" and "Down" having similar sounds. He does every other command with joy, but looks punished when I down him, along with doing that hover thing you saw in a previous video, or my favorite, putting just his elbows down and waving his butt in the air if I didn't sit him first. So now he's learning Gaelic. He's much happier being asked to Breug (lie down) than to Down.

(you'll have to forgive my lousy spelling, I do know all the German dog commands, but not how to spell them, since the only actual German I can say is that I have a wedgie)Amiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06902177995467607477noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6729901.post-23210232919831691972008-04-09T20:56:00.000-04:002008-04-09T20:56:00.000-04:00GAH!@ I hate it when word press signs me out and t...GAH!@ I hate it when word press signs me out and then eats my freaking comments!
Um, I was wondering about the language you use. Is it standardized for all rescue dogs? I always used "go get it" and "drop it" as being more my normal way of talking, And you can get a lot of threat into the "r" in "drop."
He's a smart little bugger, that's for sure.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6729901.post-14971084216354440872008-04-09T13:18:00.000-04:002008-04-09T13:18:00.000-04:00That is so cool! Dudley is a natural retriever, he was born eager to do it, but sometimes my throws go awry (we play with a rope toy) and it's so funny to watch him figure out where Grandma threw it this time!

My beloved golden retriever, Bailey, had the ultimate way of ending a game of fetch. When he got tired of playing, he would very deliberately drop the tennis ball in the yard, take aim, and PEE on it. It was his way of saying, "You won't be picking this up again."Catherinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16862784896982818464noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6729901.post-61841907351124154842008-04-09T13:17:00.000-04:002008-04-09T13:17:00.000-04:00Thanks for posting such a thorough account of how ...Thanks for posting such a thorough account of how training progresses in the 'real world'. So much of what you read makes you think it will happen immediately, and doesn't really mention dealing with the problems that come up along the way. This was really encouraging, and I'm saving it for reference.ellipsisknitshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08639952394063835137noreply@blogger.com
