For Oscar...

October 20th is Pitbull Awareness Day

What do you know about the Great American Pitbull Terrier?
(adult language and images)

Do you know the real stats?

...why you shouldn't trust a pitbull?

Do you know where they come from?

...and why BSL is unconstitutional?

Do you know what one looks like?

... and what humans have done to them?

Do you know how to help pitbulls?

... or what it's like to love one?

Pop Quiz!

They aren't monsters, they're pets.

More than that, they are family

It's time to understand that the breed is getting a bad rap

...and so are their owners

It's time to hear the good news...

believe the truth, not the hype

This is for Pitbull Awareness Day.

It's for Esco, and Star, and Puppy, and Paige, and Gus, and Reeses, and Bauer, and Hunny, and Atticus, and Vienna, and Tess, and all the other beautiful sweet pitbulls in the world.

It's for Oscar.

But mostly, it's for love.

Thank you for helping with the public outcry against breed specific legislation. As a responsible owner of a rottie-st. bernard mix breed it makes my heart smile to see the happy well behaved examples of these "vicious Killer" dogs.

Exellent post, Amie. I think aggressive dogs can be found in any breed, not just pit bulls or other "bully" breeds. I suspect a lot of problems arising with aggressive dogs stem from the owner, not the breed. Oscar seems like such a sweet dog. My nephew's pit bull, however, is not, at least not to anyone except him and my brother. Thanks for the education.

Thank you for that post Amie. I was reading some posts recently about how awful pitbulls are and I thought of you and Oscar and how untrue that often is. I have known many "vicious" dogs that have been treated wrongly because of their breed. They were some of the sweetest dogs ever. I knew a doberman pinscher that was best friends with a tiny white kitten, but everyone thought he was ferocious. I also knew a rottie that was incredibly sweet and ended up getting de-barked because of neighbor complaints. Funny thing is that that dog never barked except a gruff, barely audible, "hello" when you'd go to his home. The neighbors were idiots. I am glad to see people stand up for these misunderstood animals.

Scratch Oscar behind the ears for me, he's such a handsome fella. My humble contribution to fighting the breed specific trend came last year, when we had a go-round about banning pit bulls from all of our communities via a prohibition in our homeowners' declaration. I was alone in really hating that idea, everybody else thought it was fine. I won, sort of, by fighting for a compromise, that if the dog passes a Canine Good Citizenship test they cannot ban it from the community simply because it is a breed they do not like. It took me weeks of lobbying and arguing and forcing lawyers and such to listen to my reasoning, and educating them on the CDC test and groups like the Delta Society, and how pit bulls and rotties can be therapy dogs and trusted companions, but I won that small victory.

There is an element of inbred traits in every breed, the pit bull isn't better or worse than any other, but bad breeding can make a dog that may not respond to training or human parenting. Ironically, the pit bull prejudice out there is encouraging the wrong sort of breeding, by the crazy people who want to reinforce the aggressive traits. Responsible, loving pit bull owners will have to save this breed. I think it can be done - I recall that when I was a child the German Shepherd was the Scary Bad Dog of the 60s. Not so much now. I hope the pits go through the same transition.
