so terrifying
only the bravest souls could dare face it
and dig it out

I'm thinking possum, or some other species of giant rat. You don't want them to find out. Big Teefs.
All I can think is snake (first choice, because of entrance size to get under there, pre-dig), groundhog or skunk. None of which do they need to make friends with.
