Irony, thy name is radio

Remember a million years ago when I told you about that job offer I kinda got from my broadcasting school? My mentor had resigned, and they called me to tell me they were considering me for his job. I thought about it for a while, and gave them a price far above what I'm making now, so that if I did go with it, I'd at least be making money above the poverty line. I had concerns - not the least of which being that one of the things I loved so dearly about the school was my mentor himself, and with him gone, would it hold the same magic to me? Eventually I realized that my lack of decisiveness was actually a decision, and was preparing to call to say a very sincere "thanks but no thanks" when they called and said they'd gone with the other guy (a reason they gave was that he was out of work, and I had a job already, but the president of the school isn't really up-to-date on reproductive rights, and lives in constant - and open - fear that all of the women on his staff will become spontaneously pregnant, and leave him in a lurch, so I have my suspicions that the masculinity of the other candidate was a plus, not that it mattered to me anyway. The pres is a real gem.)

Anyway, I forgot to tell you about a phone call I got Friday. You'll have to forgive me for that, as it was one of those hazy, freaky, similar-to-acid-trippy-if-I-ever-did-drugs-at-all kinda days.

What happened was this. The phone rang.
Telephone
When I answered, I heard Mr. J's voice. He promptly began teasing me for not replying to an e-mail he'd sent two days before (I did not respond "Sorry, I have cancer, I've been busy" so I get bonus points, right?) then began telling me about a great job offer he had, and would I be interested? That depends.

"Well, you may have heard that B is leaving, and we're looking for his replacement. I've been thinking and thinking and scouring my files, and your name just keeps popping up. I think you're just perfect."

Phone Shocker
Holy crap, is he actually trying to offer me the same job he offered me a few weeks ago???
Yes, he is. What a moron.

"Um, I'm sorry, I'm going through some things right now that mean I can't work a very stringent schedule"

"Well, drat, that's a shame. Well, I'm glad you're happy - keep in touch, will you? Great! Bye!"

I was exceptionally mature, until right after I hung up the phone.
Thbpbpthpt!

Okay, I did whip off an e-mail to B while I was still on the phone with Mr. J. B agrees J is an idiot. The school was such a fabulous place for me, and the school that now has B is very lucky to have him. And it would be really great for me to be able to watch my alma mater continue on, progressing and changing with the times and continuing to be a respected force. But in order for that to happen, the senile fool in charge is going to have to retire, and I'm not sure he'll do that without kicking and screaming. It'll be interesting to watch.

I'm starting my low-iodine diet today. We aren't sure if they're giving me radiation right away or not, but just in case, I don't want them to have to postpone the surgery at all, and since we're two weeks (from tomorrow) out from scheduling the surgery, I figured I'd do it. My doctor did say that it wouldn't hurt me at all to be on it early, so that's what I'm going to do. I'm going to try to go as low-iodine as humanly possible. I was told breads and things are safe, but I'm going to try to avoid them as well, and only eat foods that are entirely prepared by me (not because bread is bad, but because there is salt in it, and most of the time we use iodized salt... hmmm.... Mom has a bread maker... do you think she loves me enough to keep me swimming in no-iodine bread for a while? I have "plain" salt now.... Or maybe I could just borrow the maker...) The idea is that the radiation treatment is iodine based, since the thyroid is the only place in the body that processes iodine. This is one of the things that makes the treatments so effective - the iodine goes exactly where you want it to, instead of killing other cells like chemo or various other treatments. And you want to have very little iodine in your system, so that when you get the iodine-radiation treatment, it sort of shocks your system. Well, I plan on shocking the cancer right outa town.

No pics today either (but you're smart enough to have already noticed that) because GB took my camera. He's playing his son in a parent/child soccer game hosted by the kids leage DSS is on. I'm expecting a harsh reminder that he's closer to 40 than 12, but we'll see how cranky he is when he gets home. In any event, his ex will be asked to take photos. I started spinning some of the merino I bought at MD from Stony Mountain Fibers, and also want to take a picture of Oscar's latest project, so hopefully there will be lots of pictures tomorrow.

hmmm. I wonder. You've got me thinking. I use sea salt (or kosher salt) in my stuff. Now I need to go check and see if it has been iodined.

and you reminded me of a show I watched on PBS once. there are kids in the world who still die b'c they DON'T get iodine. and they said the amount of iodine they need would be in tablesalt that we use every day. I am always amazed by that statement.

Good luck on the low iodine thing.. and enjoy making your food. (I do so love to cook) btw. how much of a hassle would it really be to get that gas line fixed? I mean is it beyond the realm or is it just a real pita and $$$$?

It's amazing how much food we eat has iodine, and how little iodine we need (and honestly, it makes me wonder if this cancer is caused my too MUCH iodine, but no one knows) If you take a look at the list, you'll see it seems like almost everything has trace amounts, and that's really all we need. But yes, to think of those children dying because of no iodine... well, take a look at the list, and you'll see if they don't have iodine, they also don't have much else to eat.

Oh - and SEA salt has iodine - anything from the sea does. Kosher salt is different, and is often free of iodine, unless otherwise noted.

I've avoided iodized salt for years... because it tastes so nasty. Been addicted to gray salt for about a year now... divine stuff... costs the earth but worth it!

Hope the iodine free diet goes smoothly!!!

And, you know, baking your own bread can be very soothing--plus you can put in anything you want and you know exactly what you're getting. It's extremely satisfying, and tastes good, too!

Hi Amie

I'm just getting caught up on my blog reading. I know that you know that you've got a great bunch of friends here at your blog and if you ever need anything just put out the word and we'll come running. I'm keeping you and your family in my prayers.
