Oscar and I took a walk today (as we often do) with my mother and her favorite daughter Jackie. This is a typical walk for us - we meet at a park about half-way between our homes, and walk about five miles or so:
and as we get to the end of the walk, Jackie stops anytime there is shade
but Oscar just wants to know where we're going next
Well, next we're going home, where Oscar got to go inside for some water, and I took Liberty outside for some school! This is her fourth training session, all of which have been about this long. I think she just might be brilliant!

Oscar is SO handsome, he should have his own calendar! He is a pit bull pinup boy! And Liberty is a true doggie genius - she HOLDS the down after getting the treat - Murphy leaps up instantly like, "Okay, that's done!" and Dudley wouldn't do a down all the way for love nor hotdogs - I think it's because we were on a cold tile floor and his belly was feeling delicate. :-)
If you watch in the video, there are a few times she pops up immediately after the down. She does this twice - I know without re-watching that she does it twice, because that's how many chances she gets before the tack is changed. The third time, she doesn't get clicked (and treated) for the down, she gets clicked a few seconds later. That way, she's learning down means "down until I tell you something else" not "doggie push up"
And yes, Oscar is absolutely gorgeous, and since they aren't my genes, it's not conceit to think so. He's just really beautiful!
Well, like was said in an earlier post - Oscar is hawt ;-) Of course, Liberty isn't exactly lacking in looks, either - I can't get over what a pretty color her coat is!
Do you train with vocal commands only or are there hand signals as well? It is hard to tell from the video angle?
I use both hand and voice commands, simultaneously in the beginning (the patting of the ground is a very exaggerated hand signal for down) and then eventually the dog should be able to do the command with either the voice or hand signal (I also practice hand signals from either hand, because that matters too!)
I got thinking about your work with autistic kids, and the relevance of learning to read non-verbal signals.

It is so nifty that Liberty is taking to the training so well. I am half tempted to try trainin gmy cat...
